The archipelago can essentially be divided into two sections: east and west. In the center, we find the "ensenada de los corales" or "bajo de los corales", an area of extremely shallow water (at times less than 50 centimeters) and thus impracticable for boats. The frequent hurricanes characteristic of the Caribbean never arrive in Los Roques thanks to this natural shield.

A great destination for day-tripping windsurfers, fly fishermen and beach aficionados.Above the , sailing,and sunbathing also draw ample attention. Most of the tourist accommodations can be found on El Gran Roque, accessible via a short flight from Venezuela or by private boat charter.

For those who want to stay a little longer in Los Roques but don´t have the budget to stay in a Posada every night, a cheap, fun and more adventurious option is camping. It´s free and you can camp anywhere in the recreative zone which forms a large radius around El Gran Roque.
